چکیده

In this paper, we present the concept of Passive Distributed Indexing, a general-purpose distributed search service for mobile file sharing applications, which is based on peer-to-peer technology. The service enables resource-effective searching for files distributed across mobile devices based on simple queries. Building blocks of PDI constitute local broadcast transmission of queryand response messages, together with caching of query results at every device participating in PDI. Based on these building blocks, the need for flooding the entire network with query messages can be eliminated for most application. In extensive simulation studies, we demonstrate the performance of PDI. Because the requirements of a typical mobile file sharing application are not known – or even do not exist at all – we study the performance of PDI for different system environments and application requirements. We show that due to the flexible design PDI can be employed for several kinds of applications.

P2P Network Trust Management Survey

Peer-to-peer applications (P2P) are no longer limited to home users, and start being accepted in academic and corporate environments. While file sharing and instant messaging applications are the most traditional examples, they are no longer the only ones benefiting from the potential advantages of P2P networks. For example, network file storage, data transmission, distributed computing, and co...

Delay Analysis of a Chord-based Peer-to-Peer File-Sharing System

In recent years emerging file sharing systems like Gnutella, eDonkey, Overnet, and Kazaa strongly influenced the behaviour of Internet traffic. These platforms employ different peer-to-peer mechanisms, where the application areas are just beginning to shift from undemanding content sharing towards new business case services. Those new requirements brought out new Peer-to-Peer overlay architectu...

Mobile Peer-to-Peer Networks: An Introduction to the Tutorial Guide

The main aim of this chapter is to provide the reader with a good introduction to mobile peer-to-peer networks and to demonstrate the motivation behind mobile peer-to-peer network development – the basic purpose of this book. Mobile peer-to-peer networks rely on direct communication among mobile devices of any kind. Even though today’s mobile communication architectures are mainly centralized a...

Distributed Search and Pattern Matching

Peer-to-peer (P2P) technology has triggered a wide range of distributed applications including file-sharing, distributed XML databases, distributed computing, server-less web publishing and networked resource/service sharing. Despite of the diversity in application, these systems share common requirements for searching due to transitory nodes population and content volatility. In such dynamic e...

Fair Peer Assignment Scheme for Peer-to-Peer File Sharing

The reciprocal virtue of peer-to-peer networking has stimulated an explosion of peer population and service capacity, ensuring rapid content distribution in peer-to-peer networks. Critical issues such as peer churn, free riding, and skewed workload significantly affect performance results such as service agility, fairness, and resource utilization. To resolve these problems systematically, this...
